Timing is Everything: Planning Your Dental Implant Around Life’s Major Moments

When it comes to dental implants, timing is everything. Patients frequently ask how to schedule implant placement or restoration around major life events. Vacations, pregnancies, and upcoming medical surgeries all play a role in determining the ideal timeline for your treatment. One of our primary goals is to guide you on the best timing for your procedures so they align seamlessly with your life.

Here are a few of the most common questions we receive regarding pregnancy and implants:

“Can I get an implant placed while I am pregnant?”

Generally, no. Implant placement requires diagnostic X-rays and local anesthesia. While most obstetricians clear patients for emergency dental work, implant surgery is considered elective. Therefore, I typically recommend waiting until after your baby arrives.

“What happens if I become pregnant while the implant is integrating?”

You can simply let the implant integrate and focus on your pregnancy. The bone will continue to fuse with the implant naturally, completely unaffected by your pregnancy. Once your baby is born, we can uncover and restore the implant. Until then, it requires no special attention.

“Can I restore an implant while pregnant?”

Yes, in most cases. If the implant is already exposed, the restoration process does not require local anesthesia or X-rays, making it safe to proceed. However, if your specific implant system requires a verification X-ray during restoration, I recommend waiting until after your delivery.

“Does restoring dental implants affect nursing?”

No. Restoring a dental implant is entirely safe and will not impact nursing.

Of course, pregnancy is just one of many factors we consider. Whether you are looking at single versus multiple implants, managing a chronic illness, planning travel, preparing for a wedding, or scheduling an upcoming medical surgery, every detail influences the optimal treatment timeline.

I take pride in discussing and recommending the best timing for all dental procedures so that your care fits smoothly into your lifestyle. Getting to know my patients and building lasting friendships with them is truly one of the most rewarding aspects of practicing here in Wayne.
