As many of you know, we’ve been talking about the “air abrasion” technology that we now use in the office. I just wanted to take this time to give our new patients and visitors the scoop. Air Abrasion is a technique that solves a lot of people’s dentist fears. By using this technique there is no longer a need to use the scary needle and noisy drill for simple dental procedures.
The easiest way to describe Air Abrasion is that it’s like a mini sandblaster. During air abrasion, a fine stream of particles is aimed at the decayed portion of the tooth. These particles are made of a variety of materials such as silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture. The particles are propelled toward the tooth surface by compressed air or a gas that runs through the dental handpiece. Small particles of decay on the tooth surface are removed as the stream of particles strikes them. The particles of decay are then “suctioned” away.
